Published on 24 March 2022

On the Pink Granite Coast, the GR34 trail offers you a condensation of the most beautiful Breton treasures. Between land and sea, wild landscapes and historical remains, legendary creatures and endemic species, along this hike, Brittany reveals itself.

Bring a raincoat (even if it almost never rains), hiking shoes as well as a stick to walk or protect you from korrigans and night washerwomen.

Everything ready? Then follow us, we will take you on one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Brittany!

The Great Rock

Hike to meet local species

If on your last hike in Brittany, no fantastic creatures crossed your path, we know of a trail where you’ll be sure to encounter some. On the Grand Rocher hiking trail, facing the Bay of Saint-Efflam where King Arthur fought a dragon, walk along the sea to reach the lairs of other winged creatures: Great Rhinolophus, Lesser Rhinolophus, and Whiskered Bat.

Here, in caves carved by the wind, these fascinating animals live in complete freedom. As you walk along the cliffs, their homes appear. And although you may be tempted to go and meet them, we advise you to let them rest. We’re not sure if they can turn into vampires, but when in doubt, we advise you to beware!

Prefer not to take the risk? In that case, continue your hike on the Grand Rocher circuit where more than 300 typical plant species of Brittany dot the trail. Then, little by little, the hike takes you away from the sea. The view on the Bay of Saint-Efflam disappears and you see the orchards. It is here that one of the emblematic products of Brittany is made: cider. Push the doors of one of the local cider factories for a tasting. It’s good timing, the hike is coming to an end and after so much effort, you’ve earned a little comfort.

Tonquédec

Brittany on the land side

What if we told you that not all Bretons were farmers or fishermen and that they didn’t all wear a sailor’s hat and a round hat! Okay, there are a few, but there are also knights, princesses and squires in our region!

Want to meet them? Then follow us to Tonquédec for a hike in Brittany, far from the coast and clichés! For once, on this route, you will swap the salty air of the sea for the sweetness of a river. As you head inland, the first surprise on the trail is the impressive ruins of an ancient medieval fortress: the castle of Tonquédec. Although only a few stones remain today, this building was once the residence of one of the most powerful families in Brittany. We told you that not all Bretons lived on the seafront or in the countryside!

The hiking trail then continues through the forest. Along the way, you will see a miraculous fountain, many rocks as well as a chapel overlooking the valley. To change a little from the seaside and to discover the history and the landscapes of Brittany, this hike is ideal. Just goes to show that you don’t need to have a sea legs to find an activity on the Pink Granite Coast!

Tour of the Pink Granite Coast

The entire hike

Are you not used to doing things by halves? So why do only a section of the GR 34 when you can hike the whole trail! Of course, we don’t hide it from you, this circuit requires a little training! And yes, unfortunately, you will have to reduce the galettes-saucisses and the kouign-amann to launch yourself into the assault of the most beautiful hike in Brittany!

A few days of intensive preparation will be enough to launch you into a long walk between Perros-Guirec and Lannion.

To make it to the end of the trail and complete the entire hike, we’ll let you in on a few secrets:

> First, consider making several stops along the trail and take the opportunity to regain your strength. Even if you’re athletic first and foremost, it would be a shame to come to Brittany without tasting the specialties!

> Second, don’t fight fatigue, if you feel you can’t walk anymore, opt for an electric bike! By swapping walking for pedaling, you’ll be able to ride the most beautiful trails of this hike in freedom and save a little energy. The Dourven

The Art Trail

The sun is shining on the coasts of Brittany (yes, it happens more often than you’d imagine!) and suddenly you’re faced with a dilemma: to stroll through the galleries of a museum or to hike a trail. To find a nice compromise, go to the Dourven site.
Along this hike, between the forest and the water, the landscapes appear like superb paintings. After a short walk, a first work points the tip of its nose: the beach of Kirio. A patch of sand bordered by a few trees whose reflections color the crystal waters… This scene of nature, is worth all the paintings!

And if the beginning of this hike in Brittany has awakened the artist in you, wait until you see the rest! Continue to wind your way between the customs path until you reach the Pointe du Dourven. Once there, all you have to do is sit back and admire the palette of colors shining on the whole bay. You will almost regret not having brought your canvas and easel with you!

Good news, an artists’ den, the cultural center of Dourven, stands not far from there.

While we are not sure that the local painters will lend you their brushes, on the other hand, you will be able to discover their contemporary works exposed in this gallery. Once the visit is over, go back down the hiking trail, at the end of the route: the orient awaits you and we’re not talking about the city of Morbihan!)

A few meters from the beaches, the bamboo grove of Dourven invites you to travel. Who would have thought that a hike in Brittany would lead you to Japanese landscapes?
