Lannion was founded in the early Middle Ages, and a castle was built in the 11th century on the heights above the town. The Kermaria priory and the fortified church of Brélévenez were also built during this period. Between 1588 and 1598, the wars of the League caused a huge fire that destroyed much of the town. The oldest houses that can be seen today date from the 16th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the town prospered, with a wide range of professions and numerous convents, schools and hospitals. The port was strengthened with the construction of the quays.
The 19th century was a period rich in urban construction, with the building of market halls, the town hall, the courthouse and the arrival of the railway. During the Second World War, Lannion was an important seat of resistance. The Centre National d'Études des Télécommunications (National Telecommunications Research Centre) was set up in 1960, kick-starting the town's economic development.
